Mr. Smith - Second Grade

Thank you for the big turn out at Meet the Teacher night last Thursday.  I enjoyed meeting so many students and parents.  I think we are going to have a great year and I look forward to the opportunity to work with these children.  There are many changes in our curriculum this year, so much of what we do in the classroom is also changing.  I'm looking forward to the exciting things planned for the upcoming year!

This week we will cover the following:

Reading:  We will be reading a few books together this week and working on class projects related to these stories.  Students will not have a story to read at home.  I will be working with each one to learn more about their reading likes/dislikes and current reading levels.  We will have Library this week, but I'm sure they will not check out books yet.  We will be sending  information home shortly about the AR program for third grade.  We have some new ideas and plans that we want to share with you.

Spelling:  We will not have any spelling words this week.  This year we will have a slightly different approach to spelling. Students will learn more about it this week, and hopefully they will share what they learn with you on Thursday evening.

Math:  We will have a pretest for the nine week's learning objectives on Wednesday. The assessment gives us an idea of what material is already mastered, and to what extent we need to cover certain material.  Students should not have any stress related to this as we do not expect them to have mastered this material.

We will do a few timed addition and subtraction fact quizzes this week to see where we are as a class.

English: We will not cover English this week.  We will, however, do several writing activities during the week.

Social Studies/Science:  We will not cover these subjects this week.

Other Notes

  • PE will be on Friday. Please be sure students wear tennis shoes and pants/shorts on that day.
  • We will not be ordering snacks this week.  Please send one with your child if they will need one. I do not allow any drinks except water.  Water bottles must have a pop top, not a screw on cap.
  • Please do not send one check for lunch and snack.  Lunch checks can be made payable to the Cafeteria.
  • Students will bring their Daily Folder home every night. Important notes will be in the front pocket of the folder. Please help your child put their homework in the front pocket of the Daily Folder each night.  They will take it out and turn it in to me first thing each morning and at this point, working the brads is difficult at best.
  • Students will also have a planner that will go home each day with homework assignments and a daily conduct mark.  A parent or guardian must sign the planner each night. The signature indicates that you have seen the behavior mark for the day and that the homework is complete.

I feel so lucky to be with your children this year. I will do my best to help them learn and keep them safe.
